Ukraine’s Forty-Day Kinetic Troll
How Consciously is Ukraine Hexing Ruschia?
Exactly one year ago, Ruschia was Delay, Delay, Delay - just fifty more days we need to take all of Donetsk and Luhansk. Donald took the bait.
This year, Ukraine has told Donald it is running a forty day campaign. On 25 June President Zelenskyy approved an операція впливу на державу-агресора. An “influence operation” against the aggressor state. Running 40 days. Aimed at compelling an end to the war. So the Ukrainian state itself files a campaign of long-range and mid-range strikes — refineries, oil infrastructure, the throttling of Crimea — under the vocabulary of influence, the Disinfolklore / Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference lexicon turned outward. The strikes are the vehicle. The declared target is the mind of the Ruschist leadership and public. The clock runs out around 4 August. The detail was kept classified.
Every day arms of the Ukrainian armed forces publish videos of devastating strikes - twenty-seven Ruschist ships disabled in the Azov Sea just in the past seventy-six hours. A successful strike against Ruschia’s largest oil refinery in Omsk 2,500 km from Ukraine. Six drones were filmed crashing into two exploding distillation columns. At least eight Ruschist fighter jets will never fly again. In temporarily occupied Crimea Ukraine having destroyed all the main elements of its electricity infrastructure, it is now moving on to smaller sub-stations serving military targets. Meanwhile, Russians began to queue for petrol in Omsk the day after the strike, thereby showing just how fragile Russian logistics now are.
On the number 40, there are two templates running in opposite temporal directions. The “period at the end of which someone dies” is the second, not the first.
The Orthodox/Slavic сороковини is retrospective: death at t=0. The soul passing the aerial toll-houses (мытарства). The 40th day bringing the particular judgment and final departure. The death is at the start. The forty days are the aftermath. (The East Slavic сорок is itself an anomaly — it breaks the decimal series, тридцять then not “четиридесят” but сорок, apparently from a bundle of forty pelts. Number-magic hiding in the grammar.)
The prospective template — proclamation now, destruction at t=40 unless there’s repentance - is the prophetic ultimatum, canonically Jonah at Nineveh:
“Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.”
A designated speaker declares a fixed countdown to a great city’s ruin, conditional on its turning.
That is almost precisely the grammar of a 40-day operation supposedly to compel Russia to end the war. But really probably to freak some Ruschists out, to troll Donald and to impose a plot on this summer where last we spent waiting for Ruschia’s offensive which never got going. This isn’t only Western esoteric projection.
Ukrainian commentary is itself reaching for it. At least one outlet read the 40 as the Flood. Forty days after which a cleansed world begins, i.e. a signal that Russia must be purged of imperial ambition. The symbolism is being consciously activated in the source culture.
Which brings me to the enspelling reading — stronger than it first looks, for one specific reason.
You don’t announce the timetable of an SBU special operation to the enemy if the number is doing operational work. Secrecy is the whole point. The details were withheld. So the 40 isn’t operational. It’s rhetorical. Broadcast because it’s meant to be heard.
It’s an act of archetyping. Taking an open-ended attrition war and imposing bounded, funerary countdown-content onto it. Converting stalemate into a death-clock. The one who sets the clock takes the officiant’s chair.
The prophet who pronounces the term. Whoever names the archetype, inherits its structural power. A defixio dressed as a strategic communiqué. The Crimean state of emergency that followed reads, on this frame, as the adversary entering the vigil. Reacting to the countdown. Acknowledging it.
We can’t prove Ukraine reached for сороковини consciously. Yet again and again President Zelenskyy uses the language and behaviour of the conscious hex. The folklore-like archetype doesn’t need it to be acknowledged.
The folklore-like archetype propagates through the culture’s grammar regardless of intent. This is what makes it folklore-like rather than allegory. What’s unusual is that we have partial evidence the activation is at least semi-conscious.
The source-culture commentariat is openly narrating the biblical 40. So it sits in the productive middle: not a proven occult act, not mere projection, but a number so over-determined in the Orthodox Slavic field that once uttered it cannot not toll. Spoken by a state that then labelled the whole thing an operation of “influence.”
Heavy sacralization of 40 is Semitic-Abrahamic (Flood, Sinai, wilderness, Christ’s fast, Nineveh) flowing into Orthodoxy, whereas core Indo-European number-magic runs on 3, 7, 9, 12 — and the Indo-Iranian/Tibetan 49 is built on 7. So the convergence lives at the level of the archetype — the liminal interval between death and final disposition — not the integer. The 40 points down the Abrahamic-Orthodox channel specifically.
A quieter rhyme worth flagging: quaranta giorni, the forty-day isolation of plague ships, is where “quarantine” comes from — 40 as enforced sequestration of the dangerous and diseased. And the kinetic substance of this operation is the isolation of Crimea, cutting the peninsula off and putting the garrison under siege. A 40-day operation whose literal content is quarantining occupied territory. The number and the deed rhyme, intended or not.
